David Grubb

fRoots: Album Review

David is a Scottish violinist and graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. He works as a freelance musician in a variety of genres. This album is a collection of David’s own compositions that mix folk, jazz and clas- sical influences. All the pieces were inspired by cityscapes, and this satisfying suite of music ranges over many moods and musical colours from rhythmic, exhilarating and uplifting, to wistful, tender and delicate.

David plays violin, viola and mandolin, with support from a large ensemble of musi- cians on piano, trumpet, guitars, lap steel, double-bass, accordeon, flute, whistle, clar- inet, electronics, percussion and backing vocals. It’s strikingly original work. For exam- ple, David conjures up a thrilling combination of Scottish fiddle reel and Mongolian throat- singing. Why has no-one combined them before now?

This is a highly-accomplished work of jazz/folk fusion that is every bit as engaging and enjoyable as the acknowledged masters of Scottish folk-jazz fusion: the likes of Colin Steele’s Stramash, The Unusual Suspects and The Dave Milligan Trio. I wonder if a Celtic Connections commission may lie in David Grubb’s future?
